In Memory

Martha June Yakeley

Martha June Yakeley died suddenly on December 28, 1999 while visiting friends in Massachusetts. According to Brian Jeffery of Early Music, "She was loved by many." She received her Ph.D. in music and was well recognized throughout the field, especially in the area of Classical Spanish guitar. She studied and lived outside of London for many years.

I first met June sophomore year when we "Armonk" kids (the last of the bunch) started our high school years at PHS.  As many of you know, June was physically handicapped yet had a brilliant mind.  She graduated from Barnard College and then moved to England for the rest of her life.  She became an experienced 16th -17th century music performer and scholar of the vihuela, the Spanish early version of the guitar. She gave many concerts in London and was just about to complete her doctoral thesis. June died suddently while visiting my family over Christmas in the States in 1999.
