In Memory

Victoria Lane

from Victoria's brother Mike:

After graduating from PHS, Victoria received a B.A. in Sociology from The George Washington University in DC. While studying for her M.A. in Social Work from Hunter College, she worked as an “au pair” for Kathi Brill’s aunt and uncle; the families now have been friends for five generations!

She returned to DC, working with children at The Lab School, and there met her soulmate, Dr. Laura Solomon, in 1979. They celebrated their relationship with a commitment ceremony in 1983.

The couple had two children: Tessa Kate is doing post-doctoral work in Texas while Maya Jo lives in DC and works with animals.Victoria and Laura were the first same-sex couple permitted to cross-adopt in the District, a decision that took on greater significance when, in August of 1993, Victoria was fatally injured in a senseless auto accident.

She will always be in our hearts.

Vicky and I were very good friends in High School. We stayed in touch through college as she went to GW and my sister Ann went to American. They use to double date when Vicky went out with Ann's boyfriend Roy's best friend Mike Nitka. I so wish we had not lost touch after that! We both got the same degree and worked in the same field and politically always were kind of on the same page. She was someone I would have loved to reconnect with at the reunion. It just breaks my heart that she died so young and so tragically. I am, however, glad that she did have a loving relationship ( would probably be her wife at this point....), children and meaningful work....   thanks for posting this loving tribute to your sister, Mike.   She was a very very special woman!

Vicki was my very close friend all through school,  from elementary school at Roselle Ave. Our houses were quite close. I think my mother studied Spanish with Vicki's Mom, Maria.  In any case, they were friends. Vicki's brother, Mike, was close to my sister Emily, and her husband, Jeff, for years. Thanks for all the details about Vicki's adult life to the person who posted them. I knew only some of it -- about her tragic accident and death several weeks later, and I'm still upset about it.  I also knew about the great accomplishment she and her partner made in getting laws passed so that same-sex partners could adopt children.  I believe the girls were adopted from Nicaragua, where Maria Lane was born.

I had lunch with Vicki once in Washington DC when we were in our 20s.  (My sister and her family were living there for a while.  Irene, I share your regret about losing touch with her, you, and many other people from Pleasantville.)
