In Memory

Susan Bell (Cavallaro)

from Sharon Davey:

My dear friend, Sue Bell Cavallaro, passed away last April after a valiant & brief bout with cancer. Sue's cancer was so rare that doctors were initially stymied & treated her aggressively. Throughout her journey she remained positive & cheerful as was her nature. She was a believer in the promise of goodness & remained hopeful.

We were steadfast friends from childhood. It was through Sue & her husband that I met my husband, Paul, as he and Phil were childhool buddies who grew up in P'ville & graduated from PHS in the 50's. There are simply too many memories over the decades to possibly mention.

She was lovely woman, talented, refined & arty, very creative. She only saw the good in people & her kindness is what defines her in my mind. A fiercely proud mother to her two grown children & a doting grandmother.

She was my greatest cheerleader & a devoted friend. Oh, how she would have loved the idea of our 50th reunion.

Because of the rarity of her disease, Sue donated her body to one of Boston's renowned medical research centers.

And that, my friends...

is courage.

When my sister was nearing the end of her time on this earth, she never lost her sense of humor and was aways trying to cheer her brothers up. She said that, since she never went to college, she would get to an Ivy League School through the back door..she chose Harvard.

Sue Bell (Susie, always to me) was my very first and best friend. The Bells lived two houses away and we were babies together. We stayed friends to the end of her far too-short life, even though we were far apart and there were times when only Christmas cards were exchanged. When she came to Cape Cod to live with her lovely mother, Janet, my second Mom growing up, we'd get together during my visits to my Dad who spent summers there. I am grateful that we had time to have our own annual reunions. All that Sharon and David say is true about her kindness and upbeat view of life. I wanted to add that she was also very funny, droll and quick to laugh!

So sad.  I remember listening to the Beatles with her when they first arrived in USA. She was fun and kind.

Sue was a wonderful, loyal, honest, humorous, and generous friend.  She and her family opened their home and their hearts to many of us, including myself.  I fondly and lovingly recall many overnights at the Bell household, afternoons after school listening to music, and laughter-lots of laughter.  Often, late at night, we would walk from the Bell house to the Bossert house, pick up Jill, and the 3 of us would remain at the Bossert's or walk back to the Bell 's home.  So many memories - all with Sue at the core - she had a quiet and powerful way of bringing people together.  Nan     June, 2019
